Maruti Suzuki BALENO

Maruti Suzuki has just relaunch the Baleno badge in its model lineup, but this time round it’s in a hatchback form. In Maruti Suzuki’s lineup of cars the Baleno is placed as a premium offering above the much loved Swift and just below the S-Cross. The Baleno takes on the likes of the 2015 Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20, the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Punto Evo.
In terms of looks the New Hatchback Baleno follows the same design language that is bestowed on the Maruti Swift and the Swift DZire. The sweptback headlamps look similar to both the aforementioned cars as does the rest of the curvaceous design. Up front it has a v-shaped honeycomb grille and the rear gets a chrome garnish at the edge of the rear windscreen. The Baleno comes loaded with features including Daytime Running Lights, rear wiper, electronically adjustable ORVMs, touchscreen infotainment, rear camera and more.
On the inside, Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets an all-black dashboard with silver accents. The Baleno is wider than the Swift and it shows on the inside too. There is ample of space for the passengers at the back. The centre console gets a touchscreen infotainment similar to the one on the Ciaz and the S-Cross. The steering wheel has been borrowed from its smaller sibling Swift.
Under the hood, Maruti Baleno sports a 1.2-litre petrol unit that makes 85PS and 115 Nm. This unit comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and is also offered with a CVT option. The diesel unit too is the same one that we have seen on the Swift. The 1.3-litre 4-pot unit makes 75PS and 190Nm. The diesel doesn’t come with an autobox and is only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Maruti Suzuki has also managed to launch the Baleno at a brilliant price. With a starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) the base Baleno undercuts the base Elite i20 and the Jazz by over Rs 30,000. At Rs 8.11 lakh the top end diesel variant of the Baleno is on par with the Hyundai Elite i20 but considerably cheaper than the Honda Jazz. It must also be noted that the price of the top-end Baleno is higher than that of the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Punto Evo.
